Wicker fields near Cuenca, Spain

Between the 12th and 18th centuries, Cuenca’s textile industry drove the local economy and the region became relatively prosperous. Today, long after the decline of textile production in Cuenca, wicker fields such as these still supply raw materials to local craftspeople. The vibrant shades of red and gold in the wicker stalks makes for a bright autumn scene. Perhaps, off in the woods, away from the wicker, locals are engaging in another fall harvest: wild mushrooms that the region is also known for.
